Sun Damage

"Treating sun damage at my busy family practice as well as The ReNew Institute is my passion. In my Family Practice, I use liquid nitrogen to preemptively destroy pre-cancerous lesions called actinic keratosis. At The ReNew Institute I enjoy using light and Laser based therapies to reduce or remove my patients unsightly red and brown sun damage".      Dr. Cozzolino

How Does the Sun Damage the Skin?
Photo-damage occurs primarily in the epidermis (outer layer) and upper dermis (below the epidermis) of the skin. Sunlight consists of two types of ultraviolet light: UVA and UVB. Your unprotected skin is exposed to both types of light at all times while outdoors, especially when you are trying to get tan. Chronic exposure to both UVA and UVB light leads to skin cell damage. This cell damage can result in skin cancer development as well as unsightly, uneven red and brown pigmentation changes (dermatoheliosis). The red forms as red blood vessels dilate to allow repair cells to reach the damaged areas. Browns form on the skin as damaged melanin skin cells attempt to produce protective light absorbing color in an altered way. Unfortunately, sun damaged skin does not repair itself completely or accurately enough to allow the reds and browns to disappear. These color changes will only diminish after a medical intervention. In addition, UVA light can travel deeper into the skin than UVB light and thus damage the deeper dermal and underlying supportive tissue of the skin(collagen and elastin). This damage leads to premature thinning, sagging, and wrinkling of the skin.

What Treatment Options are Available?
Today’s lasers can remove 90-95% of the brown and red uneven areas on your sun damaged skin. Lasers and advanced light systems convert electrical energy into intense light of different colors. Different color lights are used to treat different color lesions, without affecting surrounding tissues of normal color. So, a brown light is used for brown lesions and a red light for reds. At ReNew Institute we offer IPL and Laser Photo rejuvenation, as well as Red Light (LED) Photodynamic Therapy, to treat diffuse sun-damage color changes. Dr. Cozzolino also can personally target individual red and brown spots that are resistant to photo rejuvenation or photodynamic therapy. Photo rejuvenation also stimulates collagen production at the dermal layer. As the new collagen forms, it softens the appearance of aging skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are decreased.

Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and certain cosmeceuticals can also be used before or after laser and light based treatment to complement the anti-aging process. A good sun block of SPF15-30 with both UVA and UVB protection is always a must prior to going outdoors.

Our well-trained Aesthetician can help you decide on which treatments and sun blocks are best suited for you.
